Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran has called June 12 “one of the darkest days in the group’s history,” following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 that claimed at least 265 lives, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. In an internal letter, Chandrasekaran expressed grief, calling the mass loss “incomprehensible,” and assured employees that the group is in deep mourning.
The Dreamliner aircraft, operated by Air India—now under Tata’s ownership since 2022—crashed into a doctors' hostel complex in Ahmedabad minutes after takeoff. Only one passenger survived the horrific incident.
Chandrasekaran also confirmed that investigative teams from India, the UK, and the US have reached the crash site and that Tata Group will provide complete cooperation. “There will be full transparency once facts are verified,” he wrote, adding that passenger safety was always the group’s top priority.
Air India has not yet released the cause of the crash, but the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the incident. Meanwhile, forensic teams continue their search and rescue operation at the crash site.
